Black Agar Givco is an iconic reconstruction of the scent of agarwood (oud) from
Givaudan. Its scent is incredibly refined and deep, distinct yet soft and free
from sharp edges.
Thanks to its multidimensionality, Black Agar is a substance with a wide range
of applications. Oriental compositions, modern chypres, or woody accords are
just a few examples of where it will find its place.

Black Agar Givco is an iconic reconstruction of the scent of agarwood (oud) from
Givaudan. Its scent is incredibly refined and deep, distinct yet soft and free
from sharp edges.

Black Agar Givco is one of (if not THE) most popular replacer bases for agarwood
(oud). It is a rather bright (and rather loose) interpretation of the natural
oil and has very elegant nuances of olibanum and amber which makes it a
particularly good blender.
Black Agar Givco is built around a hefty dose (around 9%) of Amber Formate
(Oxyoctaline Formate) accented with naturals such as patchouli oil, amyris wood,
cedar, labdanum, frankincense and guaiacwood.
This is what Givaudan has to say of the material: “Odor: Woody, Ambery,
Olibanum. Use: Agarwood is a classical material used in perfumery. When this
wood is infected by fungi, it develops dark streaks charged with an odouriferous
oleoresin. The darkest grade, black or true agar, resembles black stone because
of the intense impregnation of oil. This resin is highly valuable due to its
rich, complex, powerful, woody-ambery scent. It is however an extremely
expensive material that is difficult to find.”
Black Agar Givco is a new base reflecting the typical odour of the black resin
of agarwoood. This complex, powerful formulation with a resinous character
brings together olibanum and balsamic/oriental notes.”
