Costus root has been used in perfumery for decades due to its unique, animalic
character. Unfortunately, its use is now banned. Fortunately, reconstructions
have been developed that faithfully replicate its scent. Costus Olifacc
successfully replaces the natural extract, while being fully safe for our
health.

Costus root oil is now prohibited by IFRA and its trade is highly restricted due
to CITES. Fortunately IFF produce this wonderful base which, as far as natural
replacers go, is an extremely good facsimile of the wild variety.
Costus oil is a rather unusual oil, having a distinctly animal odour (in the
direction of wet dog or goat). It is particularly good blended with orris
materials and it probably had its greatest outing as a key player in the
original Miss Dior (1947) by Jean Carles for Dior.
Use this base one for one as a replacer whenever Costus Oil is called for in an
old formula.
