Discovered in 1979, Melonal is an aldehyde with a pleasantly intense, almost
juicy scent reminiscent of the aroma of melons and cucumbers.
When used in a composition, it introduces a distinctive fresh note and adds
lift.

Melonal is used to contribute notes of watermelon skin, fresh air with a marine
undertone. Usually used at well below 1%, this material is due for an outing as
an overdose feature in a novel modernist scent.
As well as pure, we sell a version of this diluted to 10% because most scent
makers will rarely need to use it in pure form. Arctander, in his lesser-known
tome on aroma chemicals, suggests it has a practical use in cucumber type
products (particularly hand lotions) and as a modifier for the fatty aldehydes
where it helps to contribute a clean quality.
Melonal is found in Frederic Malle's Carnal Flower at 0.02%, at 0.09% in
Amouage's Opus XIV Royal Tobacco, 0.02% in Paco Rabanne Phantom, 0.03% in
J'Adore by Dior, and a rather huge 0.25% pure in DKNY's Be Delicious Fresh
Blossom and 0.15% in Coach Blue.

Use (Hekserij)
Melonal has a fresh green scent that is reminiscent of melon, violets, but also
sea wind and clean laundry. The scent is strong, so you often use very little of
this substance. Making a dilution of, for example, 10% in DPG, for example, can
therefore be useful. Typical use is in fresh green fragrances, especially those
containing fruit or marine scents. You usually use between a trace and 1% of
this substance in the fragrance composition. It combines well with fresh scents
and fruit scents. It adds a fresh, green, fruity accent. In perfumes it behaves
like the other linear aldehydes: it is often present in the top, but evaporates
slowly and is therefore strictly speaking a base note. It is stable in many
products, including soaps and candles, but not in very acidic products or
bleach.

Properties (Hekserij)
Melonal is a colourless to yellow liquid at room temperature. The purity is at
least 85% and the substance has a limited shelf life, replace it at least
annually. It occurs in nature, but for use as a fragrance the synthetic version
is used.
