When it comes to versatility it doesn't get much better than this! Methyl
benzoate is essential to recreate tuberose, ylang-ylang (both Cananga and
Artabotrys hexapetalus types), wintergreen, root beer and fruit like the
intensely flavoured fejioa (of which methyl benzoate can be up to 90% of its
odour volatiles!) found all over New Zealand gardens. It has a subtle
almond-like or honeyed nuance. Its scent is warm and rich, making it a versatile
note that blends well with other ingredients.
The powerful phenolic character of this chemical is tempered by the judicious
use of lactones. Despite its power, it is rather well behaved when handled
right. A must have material — dare I say as essential as benzyl acetate!
