“Introibo ad altare Dei,” intones the priest as he ascends the steps to the altar amidst billowing clouds of frankincense and myrrh. Anyone who has attended a high mass knows well that fragrant scent of sacred smoke; but in fact its connection to religious places transcends faiths. Olibanum Resinoid Vulcain from Firmenich is that odour. Singularly, it encapsulates the fullness of the most common incense blends used in Church and it is most certainly the most important extract to use when replicating it. Vulcain is Firmenich's term for pyrogenation, the act of heating a raw material to create novel olfactory profiles. This process works well on all types of resins but its effect is particularly well observed with olibanum. The raw material is very viscous (albeit pourable at slightly higher than room temperature) so we also offer it diluted to 50% in odourless natural triethyl citrate for the benefit of natural perfumers and those who prefer working with mobile liquids.
