First synthesised in 1883, Aldehyde C-10 waited nearly four decades for its moment of glory. In 1921, Ernest Beaux overdosed it alongside three other aldehydes—C-11 Undecylenic, C-12 Lauric, and C-12 MNA—to create Chanel No. 5. This legendary quartet became perfumery's shot heard around the world, establishing the aldehydic floral as a defining genre. Where earlier perfumes like Houbigant's Quelques Fleurs (1912) used aldehydes subtly to brighten florals, Beaux pushed concentration until the aldehyde complex became a recognisable note in its own right.
