Usage
Use (Hekserij)
Benzaldehyde has a strong, sweet, somewhat fruity odor reminiscent of bitter
almond, edible spice, marzipan and cherries. The smell is very strong, making a
dilution of, for example, 10% or even 1% can therefore be useful. The usual
solvent is DPG. Typical use is in cherry and other fruit accords and in almond
scents. You usually use between a trace and 1% of this substance in the
fragrance composition, but in special cases this can be higher. It combines well
with fruit and vanilla. It is mainly a top note in perfumes. Not very stable in
soap, but it is still used in, for example, almond soap because there is no
suitable other fragrance for it.
Physical properties

Benzaldehyde is a colorless to pale yellow liquid at room temperature. The
purity during production is at least 99%, but under the influence of oxygen from
the air it can be partly converted into benzoic acid. The vials will soon
develop a crust of benzoic acid around the cap or neck. That is not very
important for the smell. The substance occurs in nature, for example in bitter
almond oil, but the synthetic version is used for use as a fragrance.
