Methylcyclopentenolone has a scent that in pure form is first reminiscent of
liquorice, then caramel, hazelnut or coffee with a lot of sugar and milk. The
scent is not very strong, but it is a solid (powdered) substance. Making a
dilution of, for example, 10% can therefore be useful. The substance is used in
small amounts in accords with hay, lavender, tobacco and certain herbs and
spices such as celery seed and coriander. In that case, you usually use traces
of up to 0,5% of this substance in the fragrance composition. In addition, it
can be used in larger quantities in sweet scents around chocolate, vanilla,
caramel and nuts, for example for museum fragrances. In that case, a dosage of
up to at least 10% is possible. It is primarily a top note in perfumes, stable
in most products, including soap.

Methylcyclopentenolone is a white to beige solid in powder form at room
temperature. The purity is at least 99%. The substance has a fairly long shelf
life. The substance occurs in nature, but the synthetic version is used for use
as a fragrance.
