The molecule with CAS number 6790-58-5 is one of the most important substances in the palette of a contemporary perfumer. Every reputable raw material manufacturing company has its own variant. Firmenich has Ambrox, Symrise has Ambrioxide, Givaudan has Ambrifix, and KAO has Ambroxan. It is this last name that has entered common usage and is even used by people who are not perfumers. Theoretically, all the above substances are the same molecule, yet each differs slightly, which means that most perfumers usually have their favorite 'ambroxan' ;)

Every respected company that produces perfumery raw materials has in its portfolio the molecule with CAS number 6790-58-5, colloquially called ambroxan*. Interestingly, depending on the company, the scent of the same molecule can slightly differ. The scent of Ambroxide from Symrise, compared to Ambrox Super from Firmenich, seems to be stronger and denser, but at the same time less velvety. *The name Ambroxan is reserved by KAO.
